Jeff Sperbeck, longtime agent and friend of NFL legend John Elway, has died after a tragic golf-cart accident that left him on life support, TMZ reported on Wednesday, citing officials. The former quarterback’s agent fell off the back of the cart, which was being driven by Elway. He was 62 years old.
The Riverside County coroner confirmed Sperbeck’s death in a press release. The sports agent was injured after a fall from the golf cart in La Quinta on Saturday. According to TMZ, Elway was driving the cart. The 62-year-old was on the passenger seat, ESPN reported, citing sources, and hit his head. He had been on life support.
TMZ further added that there was ‘no indication that Elway was driving negligently’. The Hall of Famer reportedly called 911 himself. Sperbeck was found unconscious, but breathing.
Who was Jeff Sperbeck?
Jeff Sperbeck was an NFL agent and business advisor who represented over 100 NFL players during his 30-year career. He was best known for his long-standing professional and personal relationship with NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, whom he began managing in 1990. Sperbeck served as Elway’s sports agent, business manager, and business partner, playing a key role in Elway’s career and post-retirement ventures. Together, they co-founded 7Cellars, a California winery, in 2013, with Sperbeck acting as president and CEO. He also founded The NOVO Agency Inc. in 2009, representing high-profile clients like Ronnie Lott, Jim Plunkett, Joey Porter, and Trent Dilfer.
“VERY SAD NEWS: #NFL legend John Elway’s best friend and agent Jeff Sperbeck passed away today. Sad. Thoughts and prayers to John and the Sperbeck family,” one person paid tribute on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Rough stuff, knowing you killed your best friend, even if it was an accident,” another one added.
